International Baccalaureate
Dear parents and students,
FMV Işık Schools has always been pioneering and forward looking in determining its philosophy and fundamental principles about the field of education. It also has been involved in restructuring model which is innovating and open to development and interaction. FMV Isik Schools is an institution which has implemented many "firsts". It is the first school which started providing foreign languages from prep classes after the proclamation of the Republic. It is the first school which removed the subjects of Arabic and Persian from its program even before public schools offering subjects such as philosophy, sociology, logic, and trade instead. It is the first school offering coeducation regardless of gender difference. It bears the distinction of being one of the first schools of Turkey which has introduced the Socrates-Comenius program. FMV Isik Schools, with its 130 years of experience in the education sector, detects the orientation of new education trends and continues its development in the direction of future needs in this area accordingly. It doesn’t consider education only in national basis and follows the international education programs as well, and shows that it is also a stakeholder of those programs by participating in such organizations. Schools are inspected very seriously by external authorities in the process of participating in international programs. This gives an opportunity for our schools to make a comparison with similar schools around the world and test themselves in the global context.
In the 2014-2015 academic year our school started implementing International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) which is a continuation of the integration into international education. To earn the right to be an IB school it had to go through the same process in CIS integration which means the inspection of the physical conditions of the school and our courses. In December 2018, FMV Private Erenköy Işık High Schools was re-accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) which proves that it provides an education which is in international standards.
The IB Diploma Program is an ambitious and worldwide prestigious academic program. It prepares students for both national and universities abroad, and helps them to be better prepared and qualified for university admissions. The program’s unique curriculum prides itself in developing student’s research skills as well as developing their global perceptions to better understand the world at an international level.
The IB diploma program’s intensive training goal is to raise young people who will help create a better and more peaceful world by being respectful, inquiring, knowledgeable and caring individuals. It also encourages the students to be individuals who understand that other people with their differences can also be right, and who are active, compassionate and believers of lifelong learning. The IB Diploma Program, apart from all these features, provides an education of individuals who are well-rounded, curious, creative, responsible, and above all, literate.
Our world has become an information society and the way we access information and transfer data has changed. As educators, while we use knowledge and experience for our students’ future and success in order to be prepared for and ready to follow these rapid changes, we aim to raise our students to be individuals who are good at thinking and problem solving, using information in a creative way, are inclined to science and technology production, and are not afraid of getting to know or explain themselves.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is now open to students from Grade 11 onwards, forming a challenging but balanced two year programme of study in a range of subjects. The design of the course, assessments and final examinations prepare students for success at university and in their future beyond education. The programme is highly respected by the world’s leading universities and is currently on offer in more than 5000 schools in 156 different countries around the world.
The IBDP aims to provide an education which balances subject breadth and depth, as well as encouraging broader disciplines through its core components: the unique Theory of Knowledge course, the Extended Essay and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). The course aims to promote international-mindedness, including the study of mother tongue language and culture, within the goal of preparing IB students for university education and beyond.
The whole person is developed through rigorous external and internal assessments, as well as the physical, intellectual, emotional and ethical aspects of the programme. To get more info on the IB curriculum, click here.
To meet the requirements of the programme, students choose six courses to study at Higher and Standard Level from a range of options, including languages, social and natural sciences, mathematics and the arts. Throughout these courses students will gain a deep understanding of the IB Learner Profile.
The ten aspirational qualities of great learners are listed as inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, caring, balanced and reflective. These are the qualities that FMV Erenköy Işık IB students improve in themselves throughout those two years of IB.
In addition to the classroom study, students widen their education with a core element which challenges their understanding, knowledge and experience. The core consists of:
- Theory of Knowledge, which encourages students to reflect and critically examine through language, reason, emotion and perception.
- (CAS) Creativity-Activity-Service, which offers students the opportunity to involve themselves in real tasks beyond the classroom.
- Extended Essay, which enhances research skills and independent learning.
